I like zombies. They’re tenacious, hungry, and single-minded in their bloodlust. They’re also easy to kill when there’s just one or two, but much more difficult when there are hundreds lumbering toward you. In tribute to my current favorite TV show, AMC’s The Walking Dead, I’ve put together my top 10 favorite Android zombie apps for your zombie-killing pleasure! Check out all 10, in no particular order, after the break!
Age of Zombies ($0.99)
Age of Zombies is the only app in this list that costs money. But $0.99 is a small price to pay for this fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek, time-traveling undead killer. It’s reminiscent of games like Gun Bros but the graphics are a bit more… let’s say “cartoony”. But it’s the gameplay and humor that makes this game special. Nothing is more satisfying than mowing down hordes of undead with guns, rifles, grenades, and chainsaws. Oh, and did I mention there are dinosaurs?
The Walking Dead Survival Test (FREE)
If you are a fan of AMC’s The Walking Dead, you will appreciate this mini quiz. Basically, you answer a series of questions about how you would perform in a zombie apocalypse, and the app tells you what type of character you would be on the show. Unfortunately, I came out as “Dale”, not really the coolest character on the show. This one is really only fun for true fans of the show.
Walking Dead: Dead Reckoning (FREE)
Walking Dead: Dead Reckoning is what amounts to a “choose your own adventure” story where you play the Walking Dead character Shane Walsh, a small-town police officer. It reads like a comic book with comic book style artwork. Choices pop up during key decision forks in the story, and how you answer them changes what happens in the story. It’s very entertaining for fans of the show as well as fans of the original graphic novel, but anyone who likes a good story about zombies will enjoy it. It did run a little bit laggy on my Motorola Xoom, but it’s still very playable.
iGun Zombie : FPS + Weaponary (FREE)
iGun Zombie is a game that puts you on edge as the hordes of zombies come lumbering at you. You have a gun and need to shoot your way through the masses. Head shots bring them down faster, but be careful of your ammo running out. Nothing is worse than having to reload while the dead gnaw at you. If you start to get overrun, throw a grenade, or go into bullet time to slow everything down and peg them off one-by-one. Upgrade your weapons between levels if you earn enough. The game can get a little repetitive, but the different types of zombies that appear as you advance keeps things interesting.
Contract Killer: Zombies NR (FREE)
If you played Contract Killer by Glu Mobile, this will feel familiar. It’s a mission based game where you need to snipe zombies from your one vantage point. Protect friends from the undead as they gather supplies, rescue civilians that are surrounded, and kill, kill, kill! Build up an arsenal of weapons and gear including sniper rifles, assault guns and grenade launchers. If you like sniper-type games, this one’s for you.
Typing Zombie (FREE)
Here’s a game that not only satisfies your zombie-killing desires, but makes you better at typing on your device’s keyboard. Zombies come at you and you kill them by typing the word or letter that shows on top of their heads. Sounds simple but is very challenging, and quite fun.
Zombie Dash (FREE)
Zombie Dash is a zombie killing side-scroller with a bit of Mario Brothers thrown in. Your hero is constantly running and you have to guide him through the levels by jumping and shooting at all the right times. Very challenging! You find better weapons along the way, and the zombies get harder to avoid. Great, quick, casual fun.
Zombie Booth (FREE)
Want to know what you would look like as a zombie? Just fire up Zombie Booth and snap a picture of yourself. The app then processes the image and generates a 3D zombie version of you. Tap on the screen by your mouth and your zombie doppelganger will try to eat your finger! Yes, that’s me above looking all zombie-like.
Stupid Zombies (FREE)
Take Angry Birds and add bullets instead of birds, and zombies instead of pigs, and you get Stupid Zombies. Your bullets bounce around each level and it’s your job to figure out how to make them ricochet just the right way to take out as many undead as you can. Each level gets harder but more satisfying when you can take out 5 or 6 in one shot.
Zombie Golf Riot (FREE)
Now this game is unique. It only has one point… to knock a zombie’s head off with your chain saw and see how far you can make its head go. Just swipe left to start your back swing, then flick right to launch your attack on the helpless walker beneath you. Then just watch the head fly. Extra points for hitting special targets such as stop signs and pitchforks. Addictive fun!
There are a lot of zombie games and apps in the Google Play Store. What are some of YOUR zombie favorites?
