Android users are experiencing Gmail issues as it continuously reloads and flickers [Updated]

There seems to be something going on with the Android Gmail app for many users out there, and it doesn’t appear explainable. It started sometime yesterday afternoon for both rooted and non-rooted users. Upon opening Gmail from your Android phone or tablet, it gets stuck in a loop of trying to refresh and it flickers. It obviously can’t be the app itself because there hasn’t been an update in the last day, so it has to be an issue with Google. Users of the following devices are reporting the issue: Atrix 4G, Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, Optimus S, EVO 3D, Acer A500 tablet, Photon 4G, Epic 4G, Nexus S 4G, Thunderbolt, and most likely others. Here’s a quick video showing what the issue is.

I haven’t noticed any issues with my Galaxy Nexus, how about you guys?

Thanks Jeff

Update:

Google has acknowledged the issue with the following statement from Googler BrittanyBee

Beginning this morning, we’ve received reports of a bug causing some Gmail users on Android to experience screen flickering when they open the app.  We are in the process of fixing it and the issue should be resolved shortly.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

I noticed this yesterday after getting my Xoom back from the factory for a modem upgrade. I had assumed the problem was introduced at the factory; I’m glad to see it wasn’t.  After fiddling around for a while, I found the following workaround.  I removed my Google account from the device and then opened up the Gmail app.  Once the Gmail app synced with my account, the problem went away.  However, it returned after I opened up the YouTube app and added my account there.  After that, I used the same workaround, but I didn’t add my Google account to the YouTube app.  Since then, I haven’t had any problems, but (of couse) I would like to eventually add my account to the YouTube app.  Hope this helps anyone out there who’s having the same problem!

HTC Evo 4G and it just started for me.  I did use the Youtube app, so I think that has to be part of the cause…

I had used my Youtube app right before it started with mine, as well. The Youtube app was acting crazy, but I never associated the two.

I have an HTC Inspire and mine is doing the same thing.

Yes, just started on my ASUS TF101; it does stop by itself after a while and quits Gmail only to start again when you try Gmail.

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! It just started for me yesterday, early morning. I figured it was my phone (Photon 4g with Sprint) or the network. Thanks to your original post, and now this update, I don’t have to go through the mess of calling customer service or taking my phone into a store. Thank you again, for efficient, timely & correct information!!!

Since today morning (2012.03.23), cannot use GMail, actually, I would even say, cannot use my phone normally. My Nexus S (I9020AUCKF1) is not “rooted”. Android 2.3.6. (I have an idea, may be affected are only those Google users using two-step verification login (password + pin)?)

Mine seems to be working fine now (as of noon, cst 03/23/2012). Mine runs 2.3.4, not rooted, and I don’t use the two-step process. No telling right now with all of Google’s changes going on.

I have a new Asus Transformer infinity TF700t, 64gb, same problem. It freezes up at various times. I have sent a problem report to Google every time it happens which is anytime I use it. Yhis doesn’t happen with the stock Asus email app or any other email app I have tried.

just started having this issue on my LePan (Android) tablet about 2-3 days ago. It’s still a problem today. I click on the gmail app, it opens as a white screen, flickers then shuts down & a small error box opens saying, “Unfortunately, gmail has stopped”, then gives the option to send a report, which I do, each time I try to open it.
